New to Jiu-Jitsu? What to expect...
If you haven't already visited the school, you'll want to come to class a few minutes early in order to check out the facility and introduce yourself to the instructors. Are you entirely new to martial arts, or just new to BJJ? What are your goals? Are you trying to lose weight and get in better shape? Do you hope to compete eventually? Do you have any previous injuries or health limitations that we need to know about? Letting the instructors know what your background is and what you hope to accomplish will help them to give you recommendations and guide you through class in the way that best fits your needs. You should wear clothing that you're comfortable working out in and that doesn't restrict your movement; during a jiu-jitsu/grappling class, you'll need to be able to move freely. If you plan to do bag work, boxing, or working out in our weight room, definitely bring comfortable athletic shoes. For purposes of cleanliness and hygiene, no shoes are allowed on the wrestling mat. You won't be required to have your own Gi for your first class; there will be Gis and belts at the gym which can be used during class. We have our own Brazilian clothing line, so if you decide you would like your own gear, Gis and other martial arts attire (fight shorts, rash guards, etc.) available for purchase in the Pro Shop.
Every class begins with a warm-up, which includes stretching, cardio, and calisthenics. The instructor will then proceed to lead the class in whatever techniques and positions are being covered during that particular class. Following instructor demonstrations, students will participate in training drills to practice the techniques that were taught. Class typically ends with students pairing up for grappling; there will be several rounds with breaks in-between. If you are a beginner, you will most likely be paired with a more experienced student who can give you some direction and guidance to help you start out.
We know that the idea of coming to a BJJ class can be a bit daunting for a beginner. We aim to make you feel welcome and guide you in building a strong foundation in grappling and submissions while helping you reach your own individual goals. Be prepared for a very challenging workout, but rest assured, it's not as intimidating as it seems!
